Lakota Fry Bread
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 package yeast
* 10 lbs flour wheat or white
* 1 cup dry milk
* 1 cup vegetable oil
Combine dry milk, vegetable oil and sugar in sauce pan over low heat. Add the yeast till dissolved. Do not overheat, warm only. Combine this with the flour, if sticky, add water in small amounts till dough sticks together. With oiled lightly hands, knead dough for 10-15 minutes, let stand, usually 2 hours in warm area, covered. When dough rises, punch down again, and knead and let rise one more time. Heat 1 can crisco or lard in sturdy pan or pot, roll dough out in 1/2 in circles if using for indian tacos or squares if making for soup.
Fry in oil till golden brown. Dry off on paper towels to get rid of excess grease.Does anyone know any Native American recipes for bread that is sweet?
You will have a difficult time finding a 'sweet' bread recipe form native americans, most things the made were with corn and savory.
The closes you will come is probably sweet corn fritters.
I have listed a recipe the Cherokees made with sweet potatoes, I suppose you could add sugar to the recipe or top the bread with honey.
I have a friend who is Navajo and she taught me to make Navajo Fry bread, sort tortilla like but I like it better.
Cherokee Indian Sweet Potato Bread
1 qt. corn meal
3 c. diced sweet potatoes
1 t. soda
12 corn husks
Mix cornmeal, soda, and potatoes with enough boiling water to make a stiff dough. Knead well to make firm bread. Wash corn husks and scald them in hot water. Put dough on large end of blade and be sure all sides are covered with blade and tie end of blade in a loop. Drop bread in boiling water. You can make Indian Fry bread. Then serve with butter and cinnamon and sugar or honey butter.
Any basic dough can be makde into fry bread, you can even use frozen bread dough. Pink into little balls and faltten them out and the fry until golden brown on both sides.
I practically grew up on the rez (Just a white girl that lived right next to it) and never saw any fry bread recipes like the one from the first answer.

The way we make fry bread is for the dough to be very moist. After mixing.... with floured hands pull off a piece shape it into the size you want.
Have a plate with a thin layer of flour to dip the dough in..... if the dough begins to stick to your hands.
The dough should puff up quite a bit when it begins to cook.

This is about the quantity of ingredients.
2 C of flour
2 Tsp of sugar
Salt to taste
2 Tsp of Baking Powder (rounded)
1/2 C of raisins
Mix in bowl and add enough water to make a soft dough
Form into flat pieces 1/4-1/2'; thick and 3-4'; across.
Put it into medium hot oil. (about 1/2'; deep)
When it's light-golden brown, flip it over.
Cook until it is light-golden brown on the other side.
Drain on a plate coverd with a paper towel.

You can also use milk instead of water or 1 beaten egg and milk. Each gives a slightly different flavor.
